There are several ways to customize a blog. first of all, you can go to the top where it says "Customize" and you can change fonts and colors of a given template. Also, when in "customize" you can edit different elements. I chose a template with an image in it. I just replaced the provided image with one of my own. It is a digital scrapbook paper. I had to crop and resize it to make it fit reasonable well.
Also, to get fancy, you can edit the actual HTML. I am not there yet, maybe soon.
Just play with it. Look at other people's blogs to get inspired. Mine is super simple compared to some.
