Indecision...I'm Reaching Out

This is a post for all moms who currently or will soon begin to follow/stalk my blog on a regular basis. It's also for anyone who will choose to read it and then comment. I need some help with this one. It's not a huge problem. Maybe not even a problem, but something that is 'more of a general wondering...ment.' (For all of you Friends fans out there, quick what episode is that from?)
Anyway, today we had Siobhan's 3 year old well check and they did her first eye exam. It was really cute. She had to stand on this piece of tape and was very concerned about being right on the tape the whole time. And instead of saying letters, she had to tell them what the pictures were that were arranged just like a an eye exam chart. She had fun getting to cover her eye, but she couldn't always remember to do that. Anyway, the results of the exam were slightly disappointing. Her eyesight is 20/50 in each eye and 20/40 for both eyes together. They gave me the number for a pediatric opthamologist and told me that I could call if I wanted because it's not where they would like but they didn't say that HAVE to call. I hate it when these decisions are up to me.
So the big question that I pose to all of you in blog world is this...what would you do?

I would DEFINITELY call! Eyesight is so important and a pediatric specialist will be able to really sort out what her eyesight is and what you need to do about it. If she can't see properly school is going to be very difficult, so better to get it worked out now than have the poor girl suffer. Maybe he'll say there is no real problem, but let the specialist decide that -- not you.

I would call, I agree that letting the specialist decide is best, and if they say it's up to you, then you know it's probably fine either way! It always gives me peace of mind to know I exhausted all avenues too... Hope that helps! Keep us posted!

Talk to your sister who has a TON of experience in this department. Standing on tape and looking at pictures is a little less accurate than what a specialist can do - they may decide it is not a big deal. Maybe not. Ask your friends who have kids with glasses and find out where they go if you don't like the referral you were given.

It is always worth checking out. With Kate's feet my peditrician said "go ahead and try this doc - no hurry - just check it out." So, I had an appt. asap and found out it was worse than she thought. Could have found out it wasn't a big deal, but you need the specialist to make the call.

Yah, I have some advice... Hayden never did the read the pics from a chart because he was in glasses by 14 months and didn't quite know his shapes and colors at that point...

The thing is, it could totally be nothing, it could be that she got a shape or color wrong because she didn't quite know it as well as you might think she would. Like maybe she called the truck a car instead of a truck or whatever... But I would totally check it out. Go see the ped. op. They will dilate her eyes after they do a quick test and they will be able to see exactly what is happening in each eye. They can see the way the eye moves and focusses on things.

I would say it is not an immediate thing but if your insurance will pay for it, do it. Our insurance has never fully covered Hayden's glasses or anything but he REALLY needs glasses so it is something we need to pay for. I am always asking if we should test Bryn's eyes because if she needs glasses I would want to get her started in them right away.

So bottom line, get her checked out but it doesn't seem too bad. Good luck!

i have no children, clearly, but as a four-eyed-freak, JUST KIDDING, i would definitely have it checked out. when my prescription changes even a little bit i get really bad headaches. i would hate to think of your poor little girl with a migraine! but seriously, i think it is important to see the world as clearly as possible, especially for little ones who still get so much out of interacting with their environment.

plus i want to eat little kids with glasses up! tell hayden i am coming for him!!

I would call. Why not? It's always better to speak with a specialist. He/she might even do another test and get different results.

I would call, because if I didn't, I would worry. Of course, my husband would tell me not to call, because he thinks everything that doctors tell you to do is unneccesary. But I would call anyway. I have taken Brecken in to specialists a few times for things that her doctor was a little concerned about, and it always turned out to be nothing. But I am very glad I took her in, because at least now I know for SURE that she is ok.

I got your caustic little remark on my blog. It may never be updated as I have too much fun reading everyone else's blog.:o)
As far as the eye doctor, you need to call. Kaitlin was 3 when she got glasses and and because hers were so bad we checked Tenley at 18mo. and Tenley's were worse than Kaitlin's and that was major. It can delay development such as speech, and learning. So do it! You might want to test Audrey too.
