Sorry Kermit, Sometimes it is Easy to be Green

Back in March, my cousin Alison posted on her blog about how her and her husband are going more green. You can read about it here. I've always wanted to be live a greener lifestyle. I mean, come on, I'm from Oregon. How could I not live a green lifestyle? Even though I won't get the extra points for not posting on St. Patricks Day, I still felt that it would be a good thing to take account for how our family is working to decrease our footprint. I have a my issues with the whole 'global warming' thing (because lets face it, the world is going to burn and we're not going to be able to do anything to stop it) but I still feel that we were given a beautiful Earth to live in, and it is our responsibility to beautify and sustain that Earth to honor and show appreciation for that gift. So without further delay, here is our list.

Green (What we're doing now)
*We started a compost bin (FYI-you don't need to spend a ton of money on a compost bin or heap, you can build one with chicken wire and wood stakes. I made mine with a $4 rubbermaid container that I drilled holes in)
*Planted our garden with almost every vegetable that we use in everyday life (Tomatoes, red poppers, peas, herbs, etc.)
*We use a manual push mower instead of a gas powered one (Great exercise too)
* I wash almost everything in cold water and use minimal soap
*Combine as many errands into one trip
*Keep our one car in good working order including properly inflated tires and regular oil changes
*We don't have air conditioning
*Use compac florescent lightbulbs
*We just swithed to useing cloth napkins and using more towels instead of paper.

Not Green Yet (Things I would like to do if I had the space, time and resources)
*Drive a hybrid
*I would love to use cloth diapers
*I would love to live on some land so I could grow my own meat and more veggies.
*Creat a sustainable home.

Not Green Now (Things we should be doing)
*Line dry my laundry
*Take shorter showers
*Make homemade baby wipes
*Clean behind my fridge to make it work more efficianty
*Turn off lights when I'm done in a room. I have problems with that.

I'm sure that there are more things that I could be doing and if I really thought about it, I could come up with more thingst hat I would like to be doing, but I'm actually impressed with my list.

How green are you?

I have been thinking about the cloth napkin idea a lot lately. I have seen so many cute things on blogs of people making them with their fabric scraps and they are so cute! How fun, I think! Oh, and I am trying to cut way down on the use of sandwich bag - I try to use containers whenever possible. And I am sure more times it is possible and I am trying to do that.

So just curious, what's better, washing cloth napkins daily or using a thin napkin that probably biodegrades in half a second anyway? I have no idea but the idea of cloth napkins with my kids just kind of grosses me out a little, not sure why. I am so green, you could never compete with me so I won't even list the ways here, I think people would be too envious of me;)
