Politics and (almost) Three Year Olds

We all know that it's never too early to instill in our children the values of what it means to be American how to be good citizens. Of course we do it in a way that they will be able to understand and keep it in terms that they will be able to conceptualize. I thought that I had done a pretty good job with Siobhan. We've made it a point to expose her (slightly) to the debates and we've openly discussed the candidates and the current situation of our country. Well, today her and I were doing a puzzle on the floor and an Obama commercial came on the TV. Jokingly I said, 'Siobhan, do you like that guy or do you like McCain?' She responded, 'I like Elmo.' ( I was totally thinking that she could say Obama because I could totally see her mind thinking that it sounded like a muppet....I'm not knocking his name but I also know how she thinks.) To her response I said, 'I know you like Elmo, but do you like Barack Obama or John McCain?' Again she said, 'No I don't like those guys, I like Elmo.' So there you have it folks, Siobhan's pick for the next president of the United States....that lovable furry little red guy with the biggest imagination of them all....ELMO! I think everything would run much more smoothly. Unless his vice president ended up being Zoe and she brought along her pet rock Rocco. If you watch Seseme Street, you know how he feels about Rocco. Talk about another civil war on our hands.

That is funny! We have been having similar talks with the 7 year old, she wants to know about them and why some like one and some like the other. It has been interesting to keep it age appropriate yet still teach concepts. I keep reiterating that sometimes there isn't a right and wrong way, just different ways of looking at policies and situations.

That is so sweet! I love it, Elmo for President, I think he would have Mikayla's vote...

And the preschool is going great, I found that it's a great outlet when I can tell she's needing more structure, I started out doing it at the same time a few days a week, so it's only 2-3 days a week. I've played with a few cirriculums, and mainly have just made it our own. I concentrate on one or two concepts a day (then revisit them with the next day) Like a number and Letter or color. I've found that a semi-structured lesson plan works better, with a 3 year old attention span :) But she has really taken to it... There are some really great websites that have free worksheets and craft ideas for homeschooled preschoolers, and since my mom was a preschool teacher for all those years, I got a bunch of her old stuff :) Here's some websites:

This one is for A-beka, it's what my sis in law uses, and it's really good, you can also explore the website for other cirriculum...

I hope that helps! Let me know if you want any mre info, I feel like that was real scatter brained...

i think you need to send her to maddy's for some formal education, just kidding!

but that cracks me up! it is nice to know she has an imagination and isn't easily influenced even when you try to make her decide!!

your kids are cute. when can i meet them?
